CBS Governor Pierre Laporte said he was consulting the “Fair Trading Commission” to decide on measures to counter abuses by the banksTHE Governor of the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) Mr. Pierre Laporte has urged banks to re-look at the service, refrain from charging exorbitant commissions, fees, and penalties and to adjust their lending rates. At a meeting with the managers of Commercial Banks last Wednesday, Laporte said the CBS has received persistent and unacceptable complaints from clients about the hefty charges, commissions and interest rates. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently disclosed that Seychelles commercial banks were among the most profitable in the world. It appears that they are running a cartel, charging the same crushing rates, bordering on fraud.
CBS Governor Laporte said he was consulting the “Fair Trading Commission” to decide on measures to counter abuses by the banks.
Laporte said that while the CBS could not dictate bank rates, it could do something about the unfair charges and poor service in conjunction with the Fair Trading Commission.
He also said that more foreign commercial banks would be allowed to operate in Seychelles to provide healthier competition in the banking sector.
This includes institutions such as “micro credit”, which issues small loans at weak interest and is widely used in some parts of Africa and Asia. It also includes the Islamic Bank, which gives loans at no interest at all.

He also hinted that new legislation could be introduced to give the CBS a bigger say in banking rates.
It is not uncommon for banks to charge up to 15% on loans. Yet, they only offer 2% on savings, or sometimes none at all.
It has reached the stage, where most Seychellois keep money in the banks just to avoid falling prey to robbers and other shady characters.  The commercial banks are just involved in “lazy banking”, that is taking people's savings and purchasing bonds or bills to make quick profits. As most of the shareholders are foreign, that means fat profits made are saltered away to them overseas

THIS newspaper has been informed that a boy of only eleven years old has been in police custody for eight months at the Victoria police station.
This is not the first time a minor has been kept in police jail for a lengthy period. In November 2008 the editor of this newspaper was arrested and placed into police detention for speaking through a bullhorn in Victoria; when inside he met a 13-year-old girl who had been in detention for several months. After his release from jail the editor contacted the relevant authorities and secured her release.

Joel Morgan changes tune yet again

MORGAN came on SBC TV not too long ago to announce that a final settlement had been reached with ASCON and that the Government had accepted on behalf of the La Misere Residents SR 250,000 as compensation per household. Morgan also said that the people of La Misere had a choice of accepting the offer or alternatively those who don't, can go to court. “They are free to go to court”, he said. This was clearly stated by the minister and everyone who watched the news programme that night understood clearly what the little genius was saying. Last week this newspaper highlighted the issue of compensation again because the La Misere residents who had accepted the offer were still waiting in vain for their money. And suddenly Morgan came out with another lie and changed his story again, blaming SNP Lawyer Bernard Georges for jeopardising the payment of compensation to the La Misere residents.

We need to stand firm and fight for the rights of those weakest in society

Seychelles is probably one of the last bastions of tranquillity on earth, where one can live in relative peace and harmony. We cannot afford to take this situation for granted. We need to act to protect our peaceful existence before it is forever disturbed by people coming from elsewhere.

WE are sure that you can all remember the article we wrote regarding "corruption in SPDF" a few issues back? Well, we used a picture showing a pile of bricks next to the house of a big man in the army. Two days after that article all the bricks disappeared. You must be wondering what happened to the bricks? Well they have been used to build “en gro park torti” at the SPDF's headquarters at Bel Eau. Another proof of waste of the tax payers' money.
